SRK: Should I retract that I'm an Indian?

Shah Rukh Khan has refused to back down after the Shiv Sena forced theatre owners in Mumbai to remove posters of his new film My Name is Khan.

Speaking in London at a press conference, Shah Rukh Khan said he is anguished by the Shiv Sena questioning his patriotism for speaking out for Pakistani players.

SRK, as he is popularly known as, said, "What should I retract, the fact that I am an Indian but I don't want anyone to come to my country; something that my father, who was a freedom fighter for this country, taught me."

"All I have said is I would like people to come to my country to participate in the biggest event. It scares me to say anything because our stakes are very high. I am sorry to all our business partners that I have said what I believe in should affect the film," he added.

"If you have differences in ideology, why it shouldn't be allowed," asked Shah Rukh.

Khan recalled the teachings and values that he received from his father who was a freedom fighter.

"What all I have been taught by my father who was a freedom fighter for this country is wrong and my kids are steering wrong," he said. Khan said he is not going to submit to this threat.

"It's not a stand or a statement against anyone. It's actually a sort of what I individually feel and normally when a film is releasing-to be really honest and I wouldn't comment on it on a larger scale because it's not nice when a Hindi film hero who is thought of as an icon, to say this," Khan said.

"I am really sorry. I would like to apologize to Karan Johar, to Kajol and I am immensely sorry to all our business partners that because of what I said, or what I believe in, their film and their work is going to be affected."

The film, which marks the return of the famous onscreen pair Shah Rukh and Kajol after a gap of eight years, is a love-story in the backdrop of post 9/11 America. In the movie, Khan plays Rizwan, a man suffering from Asperger's syndrome (a form of autism), who embarks on an extraordinary journey across America to win back the love of his life, Mandira (Kajol).

'My Name Is Khan' is one of the first Bollywood films to be distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures in the US. Imagenation Abu Dhabi is in a partnership with Fox Star studios to distribute the film in the Middle East.

The film will see its worldwide release on February 12.
