The teleprompter showed what Shah Rukh Khan was supposed to say next — "Picture abhi baki hai mere dost, abhi Lalit aur BCCI ke beech ek friendly match bacha hai."
But SRK, known for changing the script to match the mood, gave these lines a miss at the IPL awards night on Friday. Wisely. And that is how the tone for the big night of IPL Season III was set.
What started with a blitzkrieg, marking the marriage of cricket with glamour, tapered to a finish that's bound to keep tongues wagging long after the controversy dies down.
At the IPL awards night, which, in the past seasons, has been marked by the presence of the creme de la creme of the sports and entertainment world, it was time for reading between the lines, decoding body language, looking for the tiny snickers and keeping a ear cocked for the explosive silences.
Missing in action were Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Mukesh Ambani. Mukesh's wife Nita, however, was there. The BCCI hotshots had earlier indicated that they would boycott the evening, and they did.
When Lalit Modi, the man of the moment, was called on stage by hosts Shilpa Shetty and Karan Johar, Shetty said, "Put your hands together for the man who made it all possible." She fumbled at this point, adding, "You know who I'm talking about, Lalit, so clap for him."
When Modi took to the stage, dressed in his signature dark suit and silver tie, he chose his words carefully. "Seventeen years ago, I had a dream. I want to thank everyone for allowing me to fulfil it," he said.
