"My Name is Khan" director Karan Johar talks about what inspired him to make the film, which is a big departure from the usual Bollywood fare.

Karan Johar is easily recognized as one of Bollywood's youngest and most successful stars. As a director, actor, producer and celebrity icon, Johar has shown India and the world that talent and passion can conquer all obstacles in India, where boundaries that have existed for generations run deep. Due in no small part to his achievements in the entertainment industry, in 2007, Johar was chosen as one of 250 Global Young Leaders by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum 2006.

Rizvan Khan, the hero in "My Name Is Khan," bases his life on two righteous principles: he cannot tell a lie and he cannot hide his faith. Both of these prove dangerous for a Muslim with Aspergers syndrome travelling in America after 9/11. The real-world story of "My Name Is Khan" is as fascinating and poignant as the story told in the movie.

While on his way to an Indian Independence celebration in Chigago, Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan was detained by US Immigration officers when he landed in New Jersey. According to the news Khan, who obviously has a Muslim last name, was questioned and detained after his name popped up on an official’s computer display. After two hours of questioning, Khan was released when the Indian Embassy in the US intervened on his behalf.

Khan, who is perhaps India’s most famous celebrity, was rather shocked at the whole affair. Not only is the 43 year old actor one of the most famous people in India, he was named one of the 50 most influential people in the world last year by Newsweek. It is not as if a Wikipedia search at the airport would not have revealed who he was to the officials. Khan made a statement to a CNN-IBN reporter after the incident:

“I was waiting for my bags… I thought it was nice of them to take me to another room… but that was apparently a second check. I had my papers in order.”

India’s government has reacted critically, particularly since incidents like this are all to common at US points of entry. Information broadcast minister Ambika Soni told reporters that he way people from India are frisked and treated, India should react similarly. US Ambassador Timothy Roemer made a statement as well, describing Khan as a “global icon”, who is welcome in the US. For this writer, I don’t know exactly how to translate that quirky comment. So, is he saying because Khan is so famous he is welcome, or is he saying if they had known he was so famous, he would have been welcome? Sorry, sometimes I am embarrassed by my country’s officials.

Roemer also commented, saying US Immigration is trying to find out exactly what happened. Given the number an types of security cameras at airport checkpoints, this seems like something that might have take 5 minutes to me. As Americans, we all share in a sort of collective paranoia since the 911 attack. It is understandable to be this way, of course. But freaking out every time someone enters our country with a “name” that is suspicious? If you were a terrorist, and you wanted to kill Americans, would you use a passport with a Muslim name? Or, would you walk across the US border with Mexico along with 35 or 40 million other people of color?

Khan, not exactly hard to recognize is he?

Perhaps the most idiotic aspect of this story is the fact that these Bozo’s at our border had no faster means of communication which would have allowed Khan to be released sooner. However, the most important thing about this story is tha “anyone” was insulted or treated improperly. A great joke for India to play on the US would be the next time our President visitis there, to detain him becuase his name is Barrack Obama. Heck, it is not that far from being Usama is it?

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan has confirmed to CNN-IBN that he was detained at the Newark-New Jersey airport on Friday night when he was in transit to Chicago. The actor, speaking exclusively with CNN-IBN, admitted he was shocked at the behaviour of the officials at the American airport. "They said my name was common to a name that had popped up on their computer. They wanted contact numbers of people who could vouch for me," he said.

SRK detained: Minister says treat Americans the same way

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni on Saturday reacted angrily to Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan being detained at a US airport, saying it was not justified.

"I don't think that this manner of detaining the name of religion is justified. But in the United States of America several examples have surfaced where frisking takes place more than required, according to us," Soni, who was the tourism minister in the previous government, told reporters.

"I have always felt - even when I was frisked there - that the way they frisk us we should do the same for them here," she added.

Khan was detained for two hours at the Newark airport after US immigration officials spotted the 'Khan' in his name, his aide said.

Shah Rukh was on his way to Chicago to attend a function to mark India's Independence Day.

"He was detained because his surname is Khan. He was kept until officials from the Indian embassy intervened. Now he has been released," Niloufer Qureshi, Shah Rukh's manager, told IANS over telephone from Mumbai.

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt said the incident is not surprising since the US has had a phobia towards Muslims since 9/11.

"US has had a phobia towards Islam since 9/11. They should have some data on frequent travellers. Shah Rukh is a global icon. They (US authorities) should have been a little fair to him.

Why the double standards asked actor and filmmaker Farooque Sheikh. "There is heightened conservativeness after 9/11 and sometimes it takes the level of almost paranoia. But if they can do it to former president APJ Abdul Kalam, why not Shah Rukh?" said Sheikh.

In April, Kalam was also frisked at the Indira Gandhi International Airport as he was boarding a flight of US carrier Continental Airlines.

The incident had created waves in parliament in July, with MPs from across the spectrum expressing outrage over Kalam being reportedly subjected to a full body check and even asked to remove his footwear as he waited on the aerobridge to board the Newark-bound flight.
